Singlade balls owned by Kate Sterner

I have only one ball made by Grandpa in his early days. The stitching on it is beautiful and even, and done with a lighter gauge yarn than I usually work with. Recently I made a ball that mimicked the pattern of the original, trying to get the stitching just as fine and even; but I think you can tell the difference between the older, superior stitching and my own attempt. Grandpa made this ball for me in 1988. He was 88 years old at the time, and struggled with health issues, including, I believe, arthritis. His later balls do not match the very fine stitches of his youth, but they are precious treasures nonetheless. Grandpa had really strong, huge, farmer hands, hard and calloused. Remember those hands, cousins? It always amazed me that he could have sewn those balls with such precision, particularly the ones he made in earlier years. |

This is the ball Grandpa taught me on. He drew the numbers 1971 for me and then taught me how to stitch them. Then he filled in the pink around the date (he let me do a little of the pink), and then he made a smile face. Finally, when the ball was almost finished, He let me fill in the gap on the back, the rectangular part with the green box, and within it red, yellow, blue and green rows, finishing the box. |

This is the second ball I made on my own, when I was 12. I sewed "Grandpa" on it, and gave it to him, because I thought, since he was making all those balls with other people's names on it, he should have one with his own name on it. He hung it on a door handle in his living room, and there it stayed for many years. I remember feeling so proud the first time I saw it hanging there. He never said anything else, but he didn't have to. |

In addition to making balls with names on them, I have also experimented with a variety of shapes, sizes and patterns. Here are some samples. |
