Ruthann has a variety of balls made by Martin. Some have names on them, celebrating weddings and births. One has the word Danmark on it with a Danish flag. |

Bowls of balls
Some made by Martin Sorensen, some made by Kate Sterner. Ruthann has grouped them by families for her display:

Made by Kate Sterner
When Lyle and Jesse joined the family, I made these balls for them. Jesse liked tennis and Lyle liked sailing, so I put designs on their balls that spoke to those passions. (A tennis racket and ball, and a sailboat on the sea.) |

"The Flat One"
Made by Martin Sorensen Ruthann reports that it feels lighter than the others, and kind of crunchy. We suspect it is filled with something like cork or sawdust, or some other material that has disintegrated over time. It once was nice and round, and the stitches are very neat and precise, so it must have been one of his earlier balls. Usually Grandpa just used wool yarn scraps as the core of his balls. But in my research I have found a suggestion or two that recommend cork or rags. Perhaps Grandpa tried this once, but was unhappy with the results, and switched back to using just yarn scraps. Regardless, we have to admire the beautiful stitching! |
